| Purpose: The module introduces aspect on South African Sign language culture, linguistics and basic conversational signs. This elective one-year module for students to take depending on their choice of the language of communicative competence. Basic Sign Language will equip students with relevant skills, knowledge, and attitudes to provide educational support to learners who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing. This module will go beyond only teaching students Basic South African Sign Language but provide them with a thorough grounding in the rich history, culture, and complexities that make up the Deaf community. Through the integration of SASL, this module will not only facilitate the preservation and proliferation of linguistic variety, but also cultivate an inclusive and supportive atmosphere wherein Deaf and Hard of Hearing students are able to see themselves as being acknowledged, comprehended, and esteemed. This module will assist in providing quality training for all teachers through inquiry-based teaching practices, which may ultimately ensure cutting edge teaching practices in Education for persons with hearing loss or Deafness. |
