Purpose: The aim of the course is to help the learner understand the experiences of the sexually traumatised person and the passage of healing that occurs after the event. Healing enables the person to utilise the painful experiences to regain control of his or her own life and rid the self of feelings and unhelpful behaviour that were caused by the trauma. Wade (2000:38) suggests that survivors of sexual trauma may turn the unpleasant disadvantage of sexual trauma into an advantage by gaining access to their inner self and turning that into a comfortable and attractive place to live. The course is designed to help the learner understand some of the dynamics that surround sexual trauma, become familiar with the basic principles of helping in this field, examine personal feelings and attitudes pertaining to sexual abuse and contemplate how the prevalence of this social reality can be reduced in the family, community and society.
