The Unisa Alumni Relations Office recently hosted a breakfast for the Unisa alumni chapter in Zimbabwe at the Meikles Hotel, Harare. This event, a highlight on the alumni events calendar, annually brings together a group of alumni eager to engage.
The Unisa alumni chapter in Zimbabwe is the largest alumni chapter outside South Africa.
Guidance Chinyemba, convenor of the Zimbabwe alumni chapter, opened the event with a quote from Kristine Albano Garlisi: "Our networks are our net worth." Chinyemba emphasised the importance of fostering professional networks and highlighted the value of relationships in professional and personal development. "We are living in times of interconnectedness and building meaningful connection is an important asset," he said. He stated that new opportunities are created through shared knowledge and networks, a key benefit for Unisa and its alumni that offers a wealth of resources and expertise, and promotes the achievement of individual and collective goals.

Chinyemba also encouraged alumni to pursue further studies at Unisa by underscoring the importance of lifelong learning. He spoke about the current era, which is marked by rapid change and innovation, and emphasised that lifelong learning is more relevant than ever. The array of learning opportunities offered by Unisa gives alumni ample opportunity to cultivate new skills and stay competitive in their fields. He continued: "For us as graduates our pursuit of education must not end when we are awarded a degree – it must be an ongoing journey of intellectual growth, and Unisa offers us multiple opportunities to grow."
The Alumni Relations Office used the opportunity to introduce the catalytic niche areas of the university, reiterating Unisa’s commitment to fields of study that address global challenges. The Zimbabwe alumni chapter is the largest chapter outside South Africa, boasting 10 000+ alumni, which reflects the influence of Unisa graduates in that country. The success of the event was a sign of the strength of the Unisa alumni community in Zimbabwe and the eagerness of this chapter to stay connected to its alma mater.
