Manape Lessia Mokoena

Manape Lessia Mokoena (27) wants to go as far as her career ambitions can take her. She is a Unisa student and a beneficiary of the Principal’s Bursary Fund. Born and raised in a village called Chebeng outside Polokwane, she has been with the university since 2017, studying BCompt Financial Accounting.

In spite of facing financial challenges while, at the same time, wanting to remain focused and active in academic activities, Mokoena paid her own fees for the first semester. It was, however, going to be difficult for her to register for the second semester as she is being raised by her grandparents.

For her, things changed for the better when she was awarded the Unisa Principal’s Bursary Fund just in time for registration. Mokoena says after this she did not have to worry about tuition fees anymore. "I am more encouraged to focus on working very hard towards my studies."

She admits that Unisa is her institution of choice mainly because she wants to make things happen, instead of waiting for them to happen. This is the sole reason she chose to study at Unisa - "at my own pace and time. Of course, with the help of my e-tutors, who have been on my side."

Mokoena believes the institution will offer her the best environment to nurture her passion and dedication towards her studies. "Whilst there are many higher learning institutions, nothing compares to having your qualification from a well-respected and internationally recognised institution like Unisa."

Deep down she knows she is on her way to one day owning an accounting firm and Unisa is there to hone her skills and to help her gain the required experience and skills for her to fit into the corporate world. "I am very grateful," she said.
