Purpose statement:
This mineral processing module gives students a basic understanding of the main processes used to treat and upgrade mined ore. The module starts with ore handling and the use of conveyor systems. Students then learn the principles of crushing and screening, followed by milling using autogenous mills, semi-autogenous mills and ball mills. The role of hydrocyclones in classifying particles is also covered. The module includes pumps, the basic ideas of froth flotation, and dewatering methods such as thickening, filtration and drying. Tailings disposal, magnetic separation, Allflux operation and basic sampling techniques are also included. At the end of the module, students will be able to explain and apply the key mineral processing methods used in a typical plant, understand how the different unit operations work together, and make basic decisions about equipment selection and process performance.
