Welcome to the Department of Life and Consumer Sciences at the University of South Africa. We are proud to offer a dynamic academic environment, committed to cultivating future leaders in both Life Sciences and Consumer Sciences, through a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

In our Life Sciences division, students engage with core disciplines, such as biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, biotechnology, physiology, botany and zoology. These fields provide a deep understanding of living systems, preparing students for impactful careers in biological sciences. Our research is at the forefront of several scientific advancements, particularly in areas like anticancer and antimicrobial drug discovery. Our projects focus on understanding the molecular basis of diseases, protein dynamics and drug efficacy. We also investigate gene expression, insecticide resistance and the development of diagnostic tools for zoonotic diseases. Additionally, our research encompasses conservation genomics, parasitology and ecology to preserve biodiversity and combat disease transmission in various ecosystems.

Our Consumer Sciences division focuses on the study of consumer behaviour, particularly in relation to food, clothing, hospitality and nutrition. Our research addresses vital topics such as food security, indigenous food crops and the development of nutrient-rich food products. We also explore food safety management, food hygiene practices, and the microbial quality of food and food processing environments.

Our departmental leaders in their respective fields are dedicated to mentoring students and advancing knowledge through interdisciplinary and innovative research. They guide students through the conceptualisation and execution of research aiming to provide solutions to societal problems. Our students benefit from advanced technologies and high-throughput equipment for research and practical skills development. The library services and facilities are well-equipped with access to national and international academic journals, books and other e-resources.

Our work is deeply intertwined with the Sustainable Development Goals as we actively strive to ensure good health and well-being (SDG 3), promote responsible consumption and production (SDG 12), and tackle food security challenges (SDG 2). By addressing these interconnected global priorities, we aim to create lasting, positive change that benefits both our communities and the world. Therefore, we invite you to join us in the Department of Life and Consumer Sciences, where, together, we will contribute to a healthier and highly sustainable future.

Thank you.
