Committed to being a scholar in the pursuit of knowledge

Dr Brian Molefe

Unisa alumnus, Dr Brian Molefe, is not new to the institution’s alumni family. Molefe has been a Unisa student since 1986 and recently obtained an LLB degree at the institution. His father, Prof Sopeng Prince Molefe, was an academic and obtained two of his postgraduate qualifications at Unisa in 1975 and 1980. "I attended both of his graduation ceremonies and was inspired to choose Unisa as a suitable institution to pursue my studies," says Molefe.

Molefe embraces the value of education, hence he continues to empower himself academically. He holds several qualifications from universities in South Africa and internationally. At Unisa, he graduated with a Master of Business Leadership and Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in accounting and economics. In 2008, Molefe was awarded the Unisa Chancellor’s Calabash Award, recognising him as an outstanding alumnus of the institution who made significant contributions to society and excelled in his area of expertise.

Molefe also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Economics from the University of London in the United Kingdom, and was conferred with a Doctor of Engineering (honoris causa) from the Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland. Further, he has received impactful training which include Privatisation, Regulatory Reform and Corporate Governance from Harvard University in the late 90s, and pursued the Nuclear Reactor Course for Executives at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2016.

Molefe is a public figure who has held prestigious positions at several South African state-owned enterprises such as Transnet and Eskom.

Believing in justice and knowledge

Molefe states that he is interested in human rights and access to justice. He asks: "Is justice available to all, or only to those who can afford it?"

Importantly, Molefe says that he is committed to being a scholar in the pursuit of knowledge based on his interests. He is keen to practise as an advocate or pursue postgraduate studies in both law and management sciences, focusing on corporate strategy.

"Unisa provides independence and an opportunity to pursue knowledge at your own pace, so I recommend it to anyone with scholarly ambitions," he asserts. Advising students, Molefe concludes: "Very important is to start, then have tenacity and never give up."
