Private law is concerned with the legal interests of private individuals or persons and regulates the legal relationship between them. The Department has 32 lecturers and three administrative staff members, and offers 25 modules or papers.

I am pleased to welcome you to the Department of Private Law at the College of Law at Unisa. As you commence this educational journey, I am thrilled about the transformative experiences and valuable knowledge that await you. The Department of Private Law commits itself to be Africa-focused and globally competitive and to live the organisational values of ethical and collective responsibility, integrity, innovation and excellence, responsive student-centredness, and dignity in diversity.
The Department of Private Law is responsible for teaching several of the core subjects in the LLB Curriculum. The main subjects taught are the Law of Persons in the first year, Family Law and Law of Succession in the second year, Property Law, Law of Contract, Unjustified Enrichment and Estoppel and Law of Delict in the third year, and Conveyancing, Notarial Practice, Law of Damages, Law of Sale and Lease in the fourth year. The department also takes responsibility for teaching the following elective modules in the fourth year namely SLP Selected Aspects of the Children’s Act 38 of 2005, Selected Private Law, and Certificate in Deceased Estate.
At the postgraduate level, the Department presents LLM coursework degrees in Child Law, Divorce Law; Customary, Religious and Contemporary Families; Advanced Land and Housing Law; Credit Security Law; Constitutional Property Law; Advanced Land and Housing; Law of Delictual Damages; Drafting of Commercial Contracts and Information Technology Law.
