Chair of Department: Department of Corrections Management
The Department of Corrections Management is delighted to welcome you to the Department of Corrections Management. In this Department we are committed to empower students who wish to be involved in the Administration of Criminal Justice in Southern Africa. The African proverb, Ubuntu/botho, in all its numerous and various articulations, defines the essence of the soul of Unisa. Ubuntu is a comprehensive ancient African worldview based on the values of intense humanness, caring, sharing, respect, compassion, and associated values. The concepts of community, peace and justice do not stand apart from the African way of life but is emergent in the African peoples' world. Ubuntu is thus more than a moral philosophy, it encompasses African life on an ontological level in that it relates to the essence of being, identity and living. As such, it also underpins the conception of justice. The restoration of harm done is central to ubuntu justice and it is believed that it is the interconnectedness of human beings that brings about restoration and healing in the resolution of conflicts, inclusive of criminal actions.
