Prof James Chibueze, Distinguished Professor and leader of the Unisa Centre for Astrophysics and Space Sciences (UCASS)

Prof James Chibueze, a distinguished professor and leader within the Unisa Centre for Astrophysics and Space Sciences (UCASS) in the College of Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET), has been appointed as a Director on the Board of the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) Foundation, effective from 27 May 2026.

The SALT Foundation is an international governing body responsible for the ownership and operation of the Southern African Large Telescope, popularly known as "Africa’s Giant Eye on the Sky". The foundation functions as a global consortium comprising universities, research institutions and science agencies from Africa, India, Europe and North America. Its primary shareholder is South Africa’s National Research Foundation (NRF).

Located at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) near Sutherland in the Northern Cape, SALT boasts a 9.2-metre effective aperture, making it the largest single optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the largest in the world. It plays a significant role in advancing astronomical research and international scientific collaboration.

In his capacity as director, Chibueze will contribute to the foundation's strategic leadership. His responsibilities include providing financial and governance oversight, advancing international science diplomacy, supporting technological and operational excellence, and promoting human capital development. He will also ensure that the foundation upholds the highest standards of corporate governance, legal compliance and risk management.

Reflecting on his appointment, Chibueze said: "This appointment is humbling and serves as recognition of my contribution to astronomy development locally, continentally and globally. I credit Unisa for providing an enabling environment that has allowed me to thrive and engage in impactful astronomical research. I remain focused on achieving even greater milestones."

Congratulating him on this achievement, Prof Bhekie Mamba, Executive Dean of CSET, said: "This appointment affirms Prof Chibueze as a world-class researcher and a reservoir of knowledge in astronomy and astrophysics. We are proud of his accomplishments and confident that many more successes lie ahead."

Chibueze’s appointment aligns with Unisa’s strategic focus on space studies and initiatives such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), which are critical to the university’s catalytic niche areas and overall research agenda. By participating in high-level international scientific bodies, Unisa continues to strengthen its position as a leading hub for knowledge and innovation in astrophysics and space sciences.
