Returning to Unisa's autumn graduations

Unisa autumn graduation ceremonies commenced on Wednesday 22 March 2023 in Pretoria. This season's graduation ceremonies are scheduled to run until 8 June 2023 and will be held in seven regions: Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, East London, Mbombela, Polokwane and Bloemfontein. Read more

Unisa linguist attempts to solve the literacy crisis in South Africa

Delivering her inaugural lecture recently, Prof Carien Wilsenach from the College of Human Sciences’ Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages argued that there is a literacy crisis in South Africa. This refers to the fact that 78% of learners in Grade 4 cannot understand what they read, and more than 50% of children do not know the letters of the alphabet by the end of Grade 1. Read more

Speaking during his bi-annual conversation with students and other interested stakeholders, Unisa's Chancellor, former President Thabo Mbeki, said that the major challenge facing the African continent is the production of a cadre of intellectuals, people who can produce and apply new knowledge to achieve the advancement of South Africa and the rest of the continent.
