Unisa conferred honorary doctorate on renowned educator, Professor George Sefa Dei

Unisa confers honorary doctorate on internationally renowned education scholar

Renowned educator, researcher and writer, Professor George Sefa Dei was conferred with an honorary doctorate by the University of South Africa during a graduation held at the university’s Muckleneuk Campus on Monday, 06 May 2024.

The university conferred the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Education (Honoris Causa) on Professor Sefa Dei in recognition of his worldwide acclaimed scholarly work, whose impact has gone beyond academia into local, national and international communities, as well as his lifelong quest for answers to global educational challenges.

Ghanaian-born Professor Sefa Dei is a professor of Social Justice Education and Director of the Centre for Integrative Anti-Racism Studies at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, Canada. In 2017, He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the most prestigious award for an academic scholar. He also received the honorary title of “Professor Extraordinarius” from the Department of Inclusive Education in the College of Education at Unisa.   

In April 2021, the Ontario Alliance of Black School Educators (ONABSE) awarded him a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his long-standing work on promoting black and minority youth education.
