Celebrating lifelong learning

On 5 September 2024, Unisa's ZK Matthews Hall buzzed with excitement and pride for the adult education and training certification ceremony. This prestigious event celebrated the dedication and perseverance of numerous adult learners who have committed themselves to personal and professional growth through education.

The Adult Community Education and Training (ACET) programmes are crafted to offer educational opportunities to adults eager to enhance their skills, gain new qualifications or embark on personal development journeys. The 2024 ACET ceremony, held in a hybrid format, brought together a distinguished array of guests whose contributions and messages greatly enriched the event.

In her opening remarks, programme director Kereeditse Modisane commended the 2024 graduates for their exceptional dedication, resilience, and academic excellence. She emphasised that the graduates exemplified the spirit of perseverance and achievement.

Dr Nic van Staden, Acting Director of Human Resource Development, outlined the day's purpose, emphasising the importance of continuous learning and growth. He underscored the significance of the achievements: "The purpose of  ACET is that it gives the learners the benefit of becoming better people in any environment and enabling them to engage better in society."  Adding: "The certificate ceremony is not just a formality celebration but is to show your courage and determination."

One of the most resonant themes of the day was the acknowledgement of the collective effort that underpins individual success. Speakers continually expressed gratitude to the families who provided emotional and, in many cases, financial support to the graduates. It was clear that the achievements celebrated during the ceremony belonged to the graduates and the communities that stood behind them.

Gregory Martins, Chief Executive Officer of Career Pathing Solutions, inspired learners with a motivating address, urging them to continue striving for excellence in their careers and always to remember that good work and hard work lead to prosperity, but hazy and short cuts lead to poverty. His message was complemented by a congratulatory address from Gerrard Francis, Provincial Manager: Gauteng at ETDP SETA, who commended Unisa for giving the graduates a chance to succeed.

The ceremony also underscored the broader importance of education in societal development. Various esteemed figures spoke passionately about Unisa's strategic vision and its role in shaping future leaders of Africa.

Ngubane provided motivating insights on leveraging the knowledge and energy gained through education to drive future success.

The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Gwendoline van der Berg, who expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to the event's success. "These graduates are more than scholars; they are leaders, change-makers, and beacons of hope for the future," she closed.
