The inaugural cohort of Drone Divas, carefully selected through the Unisa Alumni Office and established industry collaborators, boasts a remarkable blend of talents. Among them is a Diva actively serving in the South African Police Services, while three other Divas bring professional experience from the mine surveying industry. Furthermore, the programme extends its scope by embracing three women from Unisa Protection Services. This diverse mix of women brings unique experiences, enriching class discussions and bringing life into theoretical concepts.

The training programme encompasses a holistic approach, blending a solid theoretical foundation with immersive, hands-on practical sessions in the field. Below is a highlight of some key aspects covered during the first week of training:

  • Photography and cinematography: Divas learned the fundamentals of drone camera operation, including the rule of thirds, exposure, frame rate, aperture and advanced drone flight techniques.
  • Air law and industry knowledge: The programme delved into the intricacies of air law, the evolving drone industry, its growth prospects and the various career opportunities within this dynamic field. Participants were introduced to drone technology, controls and flight operations basics.
  • Drone flight modes and camera usage: Divas gained insights into different flight modes and camera usage, setting the stage for exploring advanced drone functionalities. They also had their first taste of coding with drone blocks, navigational commands, loops, Python coding environments and packets.
  • Drone components and technical skills: The training covered essential aspects like understanding drone components, battery management and familiarity with various drone types. Participants even got to utilise a 3D printer, expanding their technical skills.
  • Operational requirements: Divas were exposed to the operational necessities of drone usage, including applications in agriculture, obtaining permissions, navigating airspace, adhering to restrictions, etc.

When asked about their training, the Drone Divas shared glowing reviews. Anele Ndlovu said: "My interaction with the Drone Diva programme has been genuinely enlightening and engaging. It has offered me valuable insights into drone technology, making it an enriching journey that has broadened my horizons and improved my cinematography skills. I want to extend my gratitude to Inhlanyelo Hub once more." Masana Mtileni was equally enthusiastic, describing the training as "absolutely fantastic, covering everything comprehensively, providing hands-on experience, and delivering highly informative content".

As the Drone Divas continue their training journey, they are set to become trailblazers, harnessing the power of drone technology to shape the future and break gender barriers. The Inhlanyelo Hub's commitment to empowering women in technology is taking flight, one diva at a time.
