Unisa recently held a golf day in the Mt Edgecombe Golf Estate, KwaZulu-Natal. The event was well-attended by 80 golfers who have consistently supported the university's golf events that seek to assist Unisa in raising a third-stream income.
Nhlanhla Ngubane, the Secretariat of the KwaZulu-Natal Education Development Trust, hosted the event's prize-giving ceremony. In his address, he emphasised the golfers' crucial role in making a difference in the lives of students facing financial challenges at institutions of higher learning, specifically Unisa.
He highlighted that the accumulated student debt at the university had exceeded R1 billion, placing immense pressure on those who cannot afford tuition fees. Ngubane stressed that many students are not fully funded by the National Students Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), leaving them in dire need of support through bursaries.
Dr Joyce Myeza, Regional Director of the KwaZulu-Natal Region, warmly welcomed the attendees to the prize-giving ceremony and acknowledged the significant impact their participation in the golf day would have on transforming lives and creating opportunities for deserving students. She said: "Your presence shows a collective commitment to shaping futures. We are grateful for your involvement."
Sponsors who generously contributed to the worthy cause by providing various prizes for the winners include Van Schaik Bookstore, Glacier by Sanlam, Toyota Umhlanga, Image Factor, The Cavern, Drakensberg Southern Sun, DSV, KZN Wildlife, City Lodge, The Capital Hotels and Apartments, Zimbali Properties, Fresh Stop Umhlanga as well as the Umhlanga Magazine.
