Learners from Ramoshidi Technical School receiving their care packs from Unisa's Department of Sociology team
On 1 August 2025, the Counselling Unit at Unisa led a meaningful Mandela Day outreach initiative at Ramoshidi and Seabe High Schools, bringing together staff, learners and teachers in a shared celebration of ubuntu. The team distributed toiletry packs to learners, demonstrating that small acts of kindness can make an enormous difference.
The purpose of the event was to inspire learners to value both education and the spirit of sharing, honouring the legacy of Nelson Mandela. By focusing on basic needs and educational empowerment, the organisers highlighted how compassion and education together can transform lives and communities.
Now in its fourth year, the annual event continues to expand in impact. Last year, it was hosted at other schools in the same region, and each year it strengthens Unisa’s community engagement efforts. The Mandela Day event also promotes emotional and social wellness among youth in rural and under-resourced areas.
This year's programme featured motivational talks, discussions about education and self-worth, and the symbolic handing over of toiletry packs. Beyond meeting immediate needs, the initiative encouraged learners to focus on achieving their academic goals.
The Counselling Unit organised the event in collaboration with the Department of Counselling and Career Development (DCCD), the Department of Sociology and the Directorate: Language Services, with participation from staff, schoolteachers and learners.
Ultimately, the initiative aims to empower learners to recognise that every little gift carries meaning and to embrace the value of education as a tool to uplift and transform their families and communities.
