The Unisa Midlands Region, in collaboration with the Curriculum Transformation Unit (CTU), hosted a massive open online course (MOOC) workshop on 12 and 13 July 2023 at the Rustenburg Hub with the objective to establish whether staff and students understand the curriculum transformation pillars, and if MOOC sites are easily accessible.

The CTU initiated the MOOC course with the regions in 2021 as the university needed curriculum pillars to be infused into the curriculum. The workshop served as a continuation of some of the workshops hosted previously whereby the MOOC course was piloted.
Prof Thulani Zengele, the head of the CTU, provided the background of how the MOOC was introduced in the institution, its importance, and the progress to date to allow staff and students to understand what a transformed curriculum entails.
He said that Unisa needs to strive towards transformation, reduce the student drop-out rate and increase participation, and furthermore produce students who are employable to reach the goal of alleviating poverty.
In his presentation, lecturer and College of Science, Engineering and Technology curriculum transformation champion, Molefe Maloma, outlined curriculum pillars, which include African epistemologies and philosophies within the programme qualification mix (PQM); diversity, equity and inclusivity in teaching and learning; transformed assessment within the PQM; integration of technology in teaching and learning; and lastly, monitoring and evaluation of curriculum renewal. Maloma emphasised that transformation is not an activity but a process and should be practised daily.
