Unisa’s Eastern Cape Region, in collaboration with the Border-Kei Chamber of Business, recently hosted an evening network event at the ICC Premier Hotel Convention Centre for business owners and other organisations within the region. In attendance were close on 130 businesses, ranging from small business owners to large corporate businesses who are members of the chamber.

The representatives from Unisa who attended the network sessions were the Regional Director, Motale Nkgoang; his personal assistant, Bronwen Cenge; Regional Manager, Dr Themba Mzangwa; Communication and Marketing Specialist, Nontsikelelo Gasa; Administrative Assistant Communication and Marketing, Aphiwe Magayiyane; and Marketing Specialist of the Centre for Lifelong Learning, Mafeno Phora.
The purpose of the event was to foster and enhance stakeholder relations with the business sector, and to support the strategic goals of Unisa as the African university in the service of humanity.
Gasa gave a presentation and spoke about Unisa’s vision "towards the African university shaping futures in the service of humanity", which drives the institution to find answers to Africa’s educational and developmental problems. The presentation highlighted Unisa as a comprehensive open distance e-Learning (ODeL) institution, and focused on application and registration processes, various qualifications, admission requirements, and support services available to students in regions. She also listed the communication channels used by the university to communicate with stakeholders, which include digital, print, exhibitions and social media.
In his presentation, Phora explained what short learning programmes (SLPs) are. "The programmes are intended to broaden skills and knowledge in a particular field," he said. He discussed the different categories and types of SLPs, minimum requirements in terms of who qualifies for these programmes, subject areas offered and application and registration dates.
At the end of the presentations, there was a network engagement session with stakeholders and an exchange of business cards. Positive feedback was received from stakeholders.
