Unisa International Strings competition ends on a high note

On the evening of 5 February 2022, Unisa announced the winners and runners-up in the classical and jazz categories of the 6th International Strings Competition. The event took place at the ZK Matthews Great Hall, and the competition prizes were sponsored by the university. The three jazz finalists performed on 4 February with a rhythm section, and the three classical contenders performed with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) on the following day. 

The results in the respective categories were as follows:

Classical

1st Prize winner (R230 000) – Bryan Cheng (Canada)

2nd Prize Winner (R140 000) – Yeongkwang Lee (South Korea)

3rd Prize Winner (R100 000) – Clara Saitkoulov (France)

  1. Best performance of a Baroque work in the first round (classical) in the first round (R15 000)  Bryan Cheng (Canada)
