Unisa's efforts to localise the UN's SDGs get a boost

The United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), a body that promotes integrated approaches to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the Paris Agreement through education, research, policy analysis and global cooperation, recently admitted Unisa as a member. This was the culmination of a process where Unisa was first approached by the SDSN early in 2023.

Unisa’s SDGs localisation declaration was approved in November 2019, making the university one of the first higher education institutions to formally declare its commitment to localising and promoting 12 of the 17 sustainable development goals related to research, innovation, teaching and learning, engaged scholarship and operations.

These are:

  • SDG 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing)
  • SDG 4 (Quality Education)
  • SDG 5 (Gender Equality)
  • SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation)
  • SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy)
  • SDG 8 (Decent Work)
  • SDG 10 (Reduced Inequality)
  • SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities)
  • SDG 12 (Sustainable Consumption and Production)
  • SDG 13 (Climate Action)
  • SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions)
  • SDG 17 (Partnerships on the SDGs)

The recent approval of Unisa’s application for membership of the SDSN will see Unisa’s efforts to localise the SDGs attain greater heights by offering enduring SDGs-aligned solutions to society’s challenges, thus allowing for regional, continental and global collaborations and cooperation to achieve the SDGs.

Collaboration on the SDGs is a critical step in ensuring the delivery of the university’s strategic objectives, such as promoting the catalytic niche areas and delivering the Sustainability Framework 2020-2030 strategy.
