Innovation and Economic Growth: Research and Innovation for Impact was the topic of a keynote address by Prof Thenjiwe Meyiwa, Unisa’s Vice-Principal of Research, Postgraduate Studies, Innovation and Commercialisation, at a recent business networking function hosted by the university’s Western Cape Region in collaboration with Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Michelle Frauendorf, Acting Regional Director: Western Cape, stressed the importance of the relationships between the university and its key business stakeholders. She further highlighted the need for partnerships that could assist with placing students for work-integrated learning (WIL). Frauendorf also enlightened attendees about the university’s Recognition of Prior Learning.

Meyiwa’s presentation highlighted the crucial role of research and innovation in driving economic growth. Her presentation stressed Unisa’s commitment to innovation, by guiding the audience through the work Unisa is currently embarking on through its ten Catalytic Niche Areas.

Meyiwa used the platform to showcase the many successes that Unisa has had in the areas of renewable energy, advances in health technology and innovations in IT.
The presentation was followed by a lively networking session, where chamber members were given the opportunity to introduce their businesses.
