Purpose: The purpose is to make students aware of the importance of soil properties and their influence on geotechnical engineering. Students completing this module will be able to: -Distinguish between the different types of natural soils. -Identify and define the problems associated with different soils. -Provide a number of alternative engineering solutions to the problem soil encountered. -Determine actual stresses in soils, aspects of consolidation in soils, shear strength in soils, and lateral earth pressures. -Memorize the types of foundations and their applications, retaining walls and carryout any necessary calculations where they are required.
