Purpose: The purpose of this module is to enable students to apply sociological theories and philosophies to agriculture. To encourage students to understand the use of indigenous knowledge and practices of the farmers in the development of rural and urban agricultural communities. This module considers the role of women from a gendered perspective Furthermore, the module focusses on food security, food insecurity, coping strategies and vulnerability at household, community and internationally. To equip extension workers and managers to apply appropriate sociology theories in developing agricultural projects/programmes. This module will be useful to students who are in the field of agriculture (plant and animal production), agricultural economics, animal health, agricultural development and extension, as well as students that are in the field of community nutrition, food security and community development/ facilitation. Qualifying students will be able to function or work as extension officers, extension managers, and agricultural scientists to implement applicable policies and render extension services within the agricultural sector. Qualifying students will also be able to plan and develop projects and programs for sustainable development.
