Data Curatorship and Management - ARM4803

Honours Year module NQF level: 8 Credits: 24
Module presented in English Module presented online
Purpose: This module will introduce students to ways in which information and communication technologies have affected the management and exploitation of records now that records, and information generally, are created, accessed and stored digitally. As technology changes rapidly, so do the problems and challenges facing record-keepers in this environment. This module will allow students to investigate some of the ways in which archivists and records managers are able to protect, preserve and exploit digital records and information. Qualifying students can analyse, interpret and apply the curatorship and management of data, in the context of archives and records management, competently. Students can, through the understanding of different concepts and historical contexts associated with data curatorship and data management (including data storage, data sharing, archiving and preservation) perform advanced research and investigations to address the obstacles experienced in the field, understand trends and directions regarding data management and data curatorship, conduct literature searches (pertaining to data storage, data sharing, archiving and preservation), evaluate metadata standards to ensure data collection, apply discipline-based knowledge to data storage, backups and storage management, and access archival collections in digital format with an explanation of these features.
