Pre-requisite: (STA1503 & MAT1512) or DSC1520 or DSC1620 |
Co-requisite: STA2610 (only for BCom students) |
Purpose: The purpose of the module is for students to gain knowledge, skills and competence in working with one- and two-dimensional probability distributions and insight into the role that formal theory plays in data analytic methods. This module equips student with the knowledge and skills to apply the joint probability structure of two random variables, discrete and continuous, and be able to calculate expectation, variance, covariance, conditional expectation and moment-generating functions. They will have insight into distributions of independent random variables, will be able to apply the law of large numbers and the central limit theorem and understand how the Chi-square, t, and F distributions are derived from the normal distribution. |
