Purpose: The purpose of this module is for students to critically analyse, explain and apply the philosophical principles of fundamental penology within the criminal justice environment. People credited with this module will be able to: analyse and explain the crime phenomena in South Africa and the influence thereof on the criminal justice system justify punishment explain the philosophical basis of punishment critically analyse the role of the courts in sentencing debate the application of community penalties and the future of prisons.
