Purpose: The purpose of this module is to equip learners with theoretical and applied knowledge regarding the development and current state and impact of international communication; the role of international communication in globalisation and concomitant formation of personal, social and cultural identities; theoretical perspectives on the international flow of information with specific reference to various forms of international information flows such as international news, radio, television and film flows, flows via internet platforms and human forms of international flow; theoretical perspectives and applied knowledge regarding the impact of international communication such as the dawn of the Information Society, the digital divide, the role of international communication in development, changing journalistic practises, international advertising and public relations, as well as the impact for local, national and world politics. Specific attention is given to the implications for Africa and, more specifically, Sub-Saharan Africa and South Africa. |
