Introduction to Law for Social Work IIB - SCW2602

Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 6 Credits: 12
Module presented in English Module presented online
Purpose: of this module is directed at students studying towards a social work degree. The purpose of this module is to acquaint students with the functioning of the South African legal system. Since not all branches of law are of interest to the practising social worker, those with particular significance for social workers are emphasised. The module will enable graduates to enter their profession and occupations with a reasonable knowledge of the South African court legal systems to meet broader socio-cultural needs. This module discusses legal rules selected from various branches of law, namely law of persons, family law and child law, which are of particular importance to the social work profession. In addition to the last-mentioned, the contents of the module cover also the law of marriage and civil unions, parental responsibilities, adoption of children and aspects related to maintenance. Due to the importance of the protection of children, the role and functions of children's courts are prioritised.
