Introduction to Statistical Inference in Psychological Research - PYC3714

Semester module NQF level: 7 Credits: 12
Module presented in English Module presented online
Pre-requisite: RSC2601
Purpose: The purpose of this module is to equip students with skills, knowledge, values, competencies and attitudes to identify, apply and use basic inferential statistics within social science research, with a focus on how these techniques can be used to evaluate formal hypotheses in the context of quantitative research in psychology. It is emphasised, however, that the status and definition of science is a rather contentious topic, even more so within the current African context, and debated in books and articles dealing with the philosophy of science. Various common statistical techniques are introduced, but the focus is on the reasoning process required for their proper use, and how they enable justifiable inferences to be derived from quantitative data.
