Purpose: The purpose of the module is to provide a foundational understanding of penology's field of study, its relationship with social control and the law, and their practical applications. Through engaging with practical case studies and relevant scenarios, students will explore concepts such as crime and punishment, while tracing the historical development of punishment and analysing elements and theories thereof. By the end of the module, students will have gained insights into various forms of sentencing and punishment, enabling them to critically analyse and navigate the complexities of the criminal justice system at an introductory level. Ultimately, this module will empower students to approach real-world challenges within the criminal justice field with a deeper understanding and the ability to contribute positively to societal issues related to law, crime, and social control.
