Purpose: The purpose of this module is to let students gain insight into the phenomenon of Islamic law and jurisprudence (Shariah), especially in specific African contexts. Students will gain insight into the meaning of Shariah (Islamic law in general) and fiqh (practical Islamic law), Students will gain knowledge of the Quran and Sunnah (Prophetic sayings and practice) in their role as the primary sources of Islamic law. Students will gain insight into concepts such as public interest, custom and personal reasoning as secondary sources of Islamic law. Students will also gain insight into contemporary debates on the use of Islamic legal sources. Students will gain knowledge of the application of Islamic law in specific African Muslim contexts.
