| Purpose: This unit standard is an extension of Biotechnology II and as such will be useful to people who want to apply genetic manipulation and tissue culture techniques to achieve a better understanding of various disease processes. People credited with this unit standard are able to: show an understanding for the genetic behavior of living things, demonstrate an appreciation of the principles involved in the genetic manipulation of organisms, show understanding of how tissue culture forms an integral part of molecular biology, show an appreciation for the use of genetic markers as a basis for understanding mechanisms of disease, spply the basic techniques of the polymerase chain reaction and DNA synthesis and show an appreciation for the use of DNA sequencing in genome mapping.
