Molecular Techniques - LSH4813

Post Graduate Diploma Year module NQF level: 8 Credits: 24
Module presented in English Module presented online
Purpose: This module will cover common methods used in molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics which generally involve manipulation and analysis of DNA, RNA, and proteins. Some of the molecular techniques covered include recombinant DNA technology, CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing tool, cloning, Sangers and next-generation sequencing, use of model organisms in studying disease, and drug discovery. The key objective is to understand the principles behind each technique and how it may be exploited in scientific research. In addition to the theory, students will learn the process of scientific research i.e., constructing a literature search with the sources going beyond a textbook such as original research articles and make summaries and criticisms. Students will also learn the process of peer-review where they will assess one another's assignments. Students will also learn to present their work in form of a slide-show presentation.
