Plant Genetics and Biotechnology (Theory and Practice) - ASP3701

Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 7 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Purpose: Students assessed as competent in this module will be knowledgeable in the impact of biotechnology in plant production. This will encompass understanding Mendelian genetics in plant production through plant breeding. Tissue culture use as a technique for manipulation of plant development will also be performed. The module will be useful to students, agricultural scientists and farmers who are interested in gene expression and molecular genetics. The use of recombinant DNA technology towards the production of transgenic plants will be explicitly explained. Aspects related to regulations and biosafety will be forming part of the module in order to unsure the practices are within the set standards. Students credited with this module will be able to apply biotechnological approaches towards addressing agricultural challenges through utilization of their genetics knowledge within acceptable standards.
