Purpose: The purpose of this module is to build on students ability to calculate for stress in common engineering components when subjected to slightly more complex loading conditions than direct loading such as: thermal/temperature stresses, impact or suddenly applied loading, bending stresses in encastre beams and shear stresses. After completing this module, the student is expected to solve stress and strain arising in thermally loaded members/structures, strains due to impact and suddenly applied loads, draw shear force and bending moment diagrams of beams built in at both ends but symmetrically loaded, determine the centre of area, second moment of area and section modulus of different builtᆳ up sections, and determine bending and shear stresses in beams having different crossᆳ sectional areas. |
