Digital Records Forensics and Archival Diplomatics - ARM4802

Purpose: The qualifying student can apply the theories of digital records forensics and archival diplomatics in determining the authenticity, reliability, integrity and functions of digital records throughout their life cycle. These competencies contribute to the management and preservation of trustworthy records for legal, administrative, financial and historical purpose. The module is critical in establishing digital records forensics and archival diplomatics in both private and public sectors in South Africa, the African continent and the globe. Students can engage with core knowledge at advanced level, imbedding skills and values. This module support further studies and applications in the Information Science sector of the discipline of archival science, as part of the Bachelor of Arts honours in Archival Science qualification. Enrolled students in this blended mode are required to engage using computers and the Internet on a weekly basis, to connect with others, to self-study, and to participate in online discussions.
Data Curatorship and Management - ARM4803

Purpose: Qualifying students can analyse, interpret and apply the curatorship and management of data, in the context of archives and records management, competently. Students can, through the understanding of different concepts and historical contexts associated with data curatorship and data management (including data storage, data sharing, archiving and preservation) perform advanced research and investigations to address the obstacles experienced in the field, understand trends and directions regarding data management and data curatorship, conduct literature searches (pertaining to data storage, data sharing, archiving and preservation), evaluate metadata standards to ensure data collection, apply discipline-based knowledge to data storage, backups and storage management, and access archival collections in digital format with an explanation of these features. The module is an international standard in archives and records management field, used in businesses and governments in South Africa, Africa and the world.
