Under Graduate Degree |
Semester module |
NQF level: 6 |
Credits: 12 |
Module presented in English |
Module presented online |
|
Co-requisite: CHE150 or CHE1502 |
Purpose: This unit standard is an extension of Biotechnology II and as such will be useful to people who want to apply genetic manipulation and tissue culture techniques to achieve a better understanding of various disease processes. People credited with this unit standard are able to: show an understanding for the genetic behavior of living things, demonstrate an appreciation of the principles involved in the genetic manipulation of organisms, show understanding of how tissue culture forms an integral part of molecular biology, show an appreciation for the use of genetic markers as a basis for understanding mechanisms of disease, spply the basic techniques of the polymerase chain reaction and DNA synthesis and show an appreciation for the use of DNA sequencing in genome mapping.

Pharmacology - BMI2605 |
Under Graduate Degree |
Semester module |
NQF level: 6 |
Credits: 12 |
Module presented in English |
|
|
Co-requisite: CHE1501 or CHE1502 |
Purpose: This module will provide students with information on the interaction between drugs and biological systems and covers the study of drugs as well as the reactions by the body or a microbe to the drug. |
Clinical Pathology II - BMI2606 |
Under Graduate Degree |
Semester module |
NQF level: 6 |
Credits: 12 |
Module presented in English |
|
|
Co-requisite: FIS1601 |
Purpose: This module will provide students with understanding of diseased cells and tissue. The knowledge gained from this module will enable students to compare and contrast diseased cells to the structures and features of normal human cells. |
Immunology - BMI2607 |
Under Graduate Degree |
Semester module |
NQF level: 6 |
Credits: 12 |
Module presented in English |
|
|
Co-requisite: CHE1501 or CHE1502 |
Purpose: This module will be useful to biology students interested in studying mechanisms of resistance to infections, an individual's response to non-infectious foreign substances, as well as serology that are the practical methods used to detect micro-organisms. Students credited with this module can understand how cells within the immune system are activated to specifically kill certain cells, such as cancer cells, and to activate other immune cells to develop antibodies that recognizes and then respond to pathogens and other foreign substances in the body. |
Biomedical Techniques - BMI3702 |
Under Graduate Degree |
Semester module |
NQF level: 7 |
Credits: 12 |
Module presented in English |
Module presented online |
Purpose: of this module is to provide students with a practical understanding of the applications of some equipment and techniques in the bionedical scieences. Students are presented with an advanced practical course in biomedical sciences. |
Haematology - BMI3704 |
Under Graduate Degree |
Semester module |
NQF level: 7 |
Credits: 12 |
Module presented in English |
|
Purpose: This module will provide students with information on the cellular components of blood and blood-forming tissues. The knowledge gained from this module will enable students to apply the fundamental concepts of haematology that are required in the diagnosis and monitoring of diseases by identification of cells of the blood, bone marrow and immune tissues. |
Virology - BMI3705 |
Under Graduate Degree |
Semester module |
NQF level: 7 |
Credits: 12 |
Module presented in English |
|
Purpose: This module will provide students with information on the study of viruses and their involvement in disease pathogenesis. The knowledge gained from this module will equip students with principles related to virus classification, cultivation, and molecular morphogenesis. |
Zoonoses - BMI3706 |
Under Graduate Degree |
Semester module |
NQF level: 7 |
Credits: 12 |
Module presented in English |
|
Purpose: This module will provide students with information on the transmission of infectious disease between different animal species and humans. The knowledge gained from this module will enable students to understand global burdens of disease and approaches to disease management. |

Under Graduate Degree |
Semester module |
NQF level: 7 |
Credits: 12 |
Module presented in English |
|
|
Co-requisite: BMI2603 |
Purpose: This module will provide students with information on the diagnosis of diseases based on laboratory analysis of samples using tools of biochemistry, microbiology and haematology. The knowledge gained from this module will enable students to understand concepts of diseases from a multi-dimensional perspective. |
