VISUAL ARTS

General information: These study units may only be taken for the BVA, VMA and BA degree (Culture and Arts) with specialisation in Multimedia Studies. Visual Arts 2 can also be taken for the BEd degree with specialisation in Art. This subject was previously known as Fine Arts. Students are strongly advised to follow the advice given in the various modules. Credit for a degree is granted for modules: (i) either VAR2601- 2602 or VAR201- 204, (ii) either VAR3701 - 3702 or VAR301 - 304, (iii) either VAR4801 - 4802 or VAR401 -404.
Students requesting credits from other institutions must contact the department and submit a portfolio, and if successful, they will receive a permission document. Prospective students must obtain prior permission from the Department of Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology before registering for this module. They are to contact the department and submit a portfolio of artworks. Students registered for the VMA degree, BVA degree or the BA (Culture and Arts) degree with specialization in Multimedia Studies, are all expected to attend the two workshops presented. The following modules may only be taken for the BVA or VMA Hons degrees: VMA4801(VAR4801), VMA4802 (VAR4802) and PAT4801.
Registration for all practical modules closes on the same day as the semester registration closing date and not the closing date for year modules. Students must attend a minimum of one day of both practical workshops.

Form and Motion - FRM1501

Purpose: The purpose of this module is to equip students to be able to create and manipulate three dimensional forms as a preparatory phase for a more advanced multimedia practice by exposing them to basics of traditional as well as digital animation basics, music video production, video art production, short film filming-and editing skills, title sequence design and movie trailer production.
Drawing I - GAR1501

Purpose: The purpose of this module is to introduce the student to the discipline of drawing and to provide students with basic skills training in drawing. The module aims at developing creative thinking through the guidance of assignments and incorporates both methodologies inherent to art practice and the principles and techniques of drawing through the exploration of traditional and non-traditional media.
Two Dimensional Imaging - TDM1501

Purpose: The purpose of this module is to equip students with skills to be able to manipulate still images through applying desktop publishing to contemporary multimedia art. This module also equips students to make critical art-making decisions in 2D multimedia and render 2D drawings both digitally and through traditional media.
Sculpture - THF1501

Purpose: The purpose of module is to equip students to be able to apply a diverse range of graphic processes to design and develop two-dimensional graphic works and to be able to present digital, on screen and print graphic works.

Purpose: The purpose of this module is to equip students with conceptual understanding of advanced visual arts practices and thereby acquire the necessary skills and competencies to engage seamlessly in debates about design and development of artworks through the submission of portfolios. Qualifying students are also exposed to for the field of multimedia studies. Students will also be able to formally and conceptually explore the visual and metaphorical potential of the notion of mass and or popular culture inherent in artworks and multimedia.

Purpose: The purpose of this module is to equip students to be able to acquire the conceptual understanding of advanced visual arts practices and acquire understanding and application of the role and significance of multimedia studies. Qualifying students will also explore both formally both formally and conceptually the visual and metaphorical potential of the notion of mass and or popular culture and how it can be manifested in artwork and multimedia design.
Professional Art Practice I - PAT3701

Recommendation: All Art History modules are completed up to level 2
Purpose: Qualifying students will conduct research by identifying an appropriate focus in art practice and thereafter map the terrain for art practitioners through the submission of a proposal and a report. The research conducted will enable students to express themselves as artists in writing and present themselves professionally at various forums such as at art galleries, public forums, art exhibitions and in cyber space. Qualifying students will gain skills and competencies related to curatorial and marketing demands of a professional artist regarding formal and general conduct/attitude.
