Rules: Students enrolling for the first time in 2018 are required to do MAT1510. Students who registered prior to 2018 are not required to do this module. Students should register for MAT1581 in the 2nd semester, once they have done the first part of MAT1510. CHF1501 replaces CEM2601. The following practical modules must be done at Unisa's Muckleneuk Campus in Pretoria: CHE1PRA, INC2PRA, ORC2PRA and PCH2PRA. The practical component of these study units is compulsory. Registration for the practical component is done at Unisa. The Chemical Engineering practical courses must be done at Unisa Florida laboratories. Both the theoretical and the practical component of the subject must be passed before credit for the subject can be obtained. The practical component must be done simultaneously or after the theoretical component. Modules can be completed concurrently or in different years. Access to a personal computer is compulsory for the practical. All study materials and examination papers are available only in English. |

Purpose statement: Chemical engineering is concerned with the manufacturing of chemicals on an industrial scale as well as the industrial processes that convert raw materials into products that have a higher economic value and in a particular manufacturing environment; there is usually a chemical design team. This team is usually led by a degreed Chemical Engineer, usually assisted by a Chemical Engineering Technologist or a Chemical Engineering Technician. They all obtain their qualifications from a university of technology or a university. The technologist has obtained a BTech degree and the technician a National Diploma. The team is qualified to research, develop, design, construct and operate the plants required to make any processed product. A qualified person with sufficient experience will be able to register with the Engineering Council of South Africa as a Professional Technician in this field of Engineering. |

This qualification will be presented using both online and distance learning modes. | |
Qualification offered until 2023, and ONLY for students previously registered for this qualification. |
Please note: Should you wish to start a new qualification, please apply online for the alternative qualification during the prescribed application period.
Each Unisa qualification is structured in such a way that you need to pass a certain number of NQF level credits within a certain amount of time in order to graduate.
Pre-requisite: If Module A is a pre-requisite for Module B, you must pass Module A before you may register for Module B.
You may not register for more than the allowed maximum number of credits / modules per academic year and / or semester: 60 credits per semester or 120 credits per academic year.
The maximum number of credits do not include supplementary and / or aegrotat examinations from a previous semester. Modules taken for non-degree / non-diploma purposes also count towards the maximum number of credits allowed.
You must take your available time into consideration when choosing your modules, as this will impact your academic performance. You need approximately
