Unisa East London alumni chapter committed to making a difference

The recent Unisa East London alumni chapter event was a significant gathering for former university students. The event, centred around networking opportunities, was joined by Dr Themba Mzangwa, the Finance and Operations Manager of the Unisa Eastern Cape Region, who expressed gratitude to the East London alumni for their valuable contributions to the institution.

Amidst celebrating Unisa's 150-year milestone, the event highlighted the university's resilience in overcoming challenges and its historical role in shaping great leaders of democratic South Africa.

"Unisa has endured and triumphed through various challenges, proving its resilience. Despite facing difficulties like any other institution, the university has emerged stronger and continues to play a crucial role in shaping the future of South Africa, Africa and the world," said Mzangwa.

Fundraising projects

Sipho Konkwane, the alumni chapter convenor, encouraged alumni to participate in upcoming projects actively, starting with a fun run or walk event scheduled for 23 September 2023. "These projects aim to support Unisa students, helping them achieve their academic goals and positively contribute to the country's economy," he said.

The funds raised from the fun run or walk event will be dedicated to establishing alumni scholarships at the 21 alumni chapters across Africa. This scholarship initiative seeks to assist students who face financial challenges and cannot complete their studies due to outstanding fees. It will also provide much-needed financial aid and support to deserving students, ensuring financial constraints do not hinder their educational aspirations.

While the East London alumni chapter is small, they have demonstrated their commitment to making a difference in the lives of students and future alumni. During the event, they challenged other alumni chapters to join them to raise substantial scholarship funds.
