The Unisa Alumni Relations office, in collaboration with Khanya Mahlare, Executive Director of the Department: Institutional Advancement, recently paid a visit to the Unisa Namibia Alumni Chapter (UNAC) in Windhoek.
The Unisa team, joined by the UNAC Convenor, Dr Colen Tuaundu, visited Windhoek Gymnasium Curro Private School in September 2023 as part of an outreach initiative to two schools in Katutura, Windhoek.
A notable highlight was the commitment of the UNAC to collaborate with Gymnasium School in their efforts to uplift lives. Colette Rieckert, Chief Executive Officer of the Gymnasium School, and the outreach team emphasised their ongoing collaboration with Butterfly Pre-Primary School and Dr Frans Aupa Indongo Primary School, through which they have provided essential items.
Previously, the UNAC donated items to the Butterfly Pre-Primary School through Gymnasium School. Tuaundu will now oversee the continued support for these two schools in partnership with Gymnasium School.
The UNAC also hosted a breakfast at the Hilton Windhoek Hotel. The breakfast allowed alumni to network and discuss various chapter-related matters.
During the event, Mahlare encouraged alumni to become more actively involved in university affairs and to consider further studies with Unisa. She also informed them that there are ongoing postgraduate registrations in the master’s and doctoral programmes at Unisa.
Unisa is committed to the theme "Reclaiming Africa’s intellectual futures", which aims to explore various catalytic niche areas. Mahlare expressed her hope that this theme would inspire shared interest in advancing Unisa’s academic agenda and enhancing the experiences of its academics to serve humanity better.
The university’s accomplishments in research, innovation, science and engineering remain noteworthy. Unisa’s recent recognition in the 2023 Webometrics and Shanghai Rankings has positioned it among the top 10 universities in the country.
Tuaundu called upon alumni to unite, collaborate and assist each other to achieve goals. He also emphasised the importance of alumni becoming mentors for students facing study challenges, recognising the valuable support alumni can provide.
Many attendees were interested in postgraduate studies and sought information about various fields and programmes. For enquiries and further information, contact Tuaundu at ctuaundu@gmail.com.
