International recognition for Unisan’s groundbreaking research

The College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES) at Unisa continues to shine on the global stage, as one of its professors is recognised for groundbreaking research in biotechnology. At the 3rd Pan African Cancer Research Institute (PACRI) International Conference, held from 23 to 26 March 2025, Prof Zilungile Mkhize-Kwitshana received the Advancement Excellence Award in recognition of her contributions to research on the links between neglected tropical diseases and oncogenesis, and also for building research capacity in this field.

The conference, themed "Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges, Transforming Cancer Care in Africa", unites global and African experts to tackle the complex challenges of cancer care across the continent. With a strong emphasis on leveraging both local and international expertise, the event creates a platform for collaborative efforts aimed at transforming cancer research, treatment and policy reform.

"I am honoured to receive this award," said Mkhize-Kwitshana. "It highlights the importance of paying attention to diseases that have long been neglected and their impact on human health. I share this award with all the researchers and collaborators committed to this cause."

Mkhize-Kwitshana was joined by fellow CAES colleagues at the conference. Prof Monde Ntwasa, Prof Michelle van Wyk and Sibusiso Malindisa all contributed through panel chairing and research presentations. The CAES delegation’s participation at the conference exemplifies the college’s dedication to advancing research, forging global ties and shaping futures.
