Unisan appointed by International Council on Archives (ICA)

"It has been a staggering journey, but my past is my history, my present is sorted, and my future is my motive." These are the words of Prof Ngoako Marutha of the Department of Information Science in the College of Human Sciences, who was recently appointed as a Mentor for New Professionals 2022/2023 by the International Council on Archives (ICA).

The ICA was created under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to be a voice for archives and archivists on the international stage. Its mission is to promote the preservation and the use of archives around the world while also working to protect and enhance the "memory" of the world and to improve communications while respecting cultural diversity.

As a mentor, Marutha will offer support and advice on professional and career-oriented issues to new professionals to enhance their experience with and understanding of the records and archives profession and various career and professional development opportunities. He may also review draft articles or reports written by active new professionals for publication on the ICA’s website.

Marutha, who holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree (DLitt et Phil) from Unisa, published more than twenty articles in accredited national and international journals and four book chapters in accredited international publications over the past five years. He is currently teaching archival principles and practice for the programme on archives and records management research and information and knowledge governance on honour’s level.

The Limpopo-born Marutha also serves on various committees, including the Departmental Research and Innovation Committee (Department of Information Science) of Unisa as Chairperson, the University Senate Committee, the College (CHS) Research and Innovation Committee, the Departmental Higher Degree Committee, the Departmental Master’s and Doctorate (M&D) Committee, the Departmental Community Engagement Committee and the Departmental Executive Management Committee Archives (ICA).

His research interests include knowledge, archives and records management, especially concerning patient and hospital records, electronic records, cloud computing, blockchain technology, 4IR technologies, enterprise content management, big data management, police case records security, library management and marketing, and open distance e-learning (ODeL).
