Great strides towards concretising Unisa-PMC partnership

Following a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that was signed early this year between Unisa and Palabora Mining Company (PMC), a groundbreaking initiative by Unisa’s Department of Mining, Minerals and Geomatics Engineering in partnership with the Directorate of Student Admissions and Registration and the Department of Finance (Student Accounts)  set out to make significant strides towards enriching the careers of PMC employees. With the recently opened semester two applications and registrations, PMC employees were assisted by the aforementioned Unisa departments in enrolling at PMC’s premises for undergraduate, and postgraduate qualifications and short learning programmes. One of the objectives that was highlighted in the MoU between the two organisations was to foster personal and professional growth of PMC employees who are enrolled at Unisa.

The Unisa departments were able to address student queries and ensured a smooth registration process for PMC employees in pursuing their higher education qualifications. This collaborative effort has been met with immense gratitude from PMC, who acknowledged the proactive approach of the Unisa team. The instant communication and resolution of student queries allowed the mine employees and prospective Unisa students to focus on their academic pursuits. The initiative took place at Palabora Mining Company, in Phalaborwa from 15 July to 18 July 2024.

During this visit, Prof Francois Mulenga, Chair of the Department of Mining, Minerals and Geomatics Engineering at Unisa also had an opportunity to share insights and expertise with registered master’s and doctoral students from PMC that he is supervising, as well prospective postgraduate students.

The Unisa-PMC partnership exemplifies the power of collaboration, and the positive impact similar types of partnerships can have on individuals and organisations. By investing in the education and development of PMC employees, the partnership is not only enhancing their lives, but also contributing to the growth and success of the mining industry as a whole.

As this initiative continues to flourish, it serves as a beacon of hope for mining engineering education in South Africa. The Unisa-PMC partnership has set a remarkable example of what can be achieved through collective effort and a commitment to empowering individuals.
