Welcome to the Department of Physics at the University of South Africa (UNISA) which is the oldest university in South Africa, founded in 1873. Our department is striving for academic excellence and research. Our department offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, from a Higher Certificate in Physical Sciences, B.Sc. degrees, B.Sc. Honours, M.Sc.  to doctoral studies in Physics. We are committed to fostering a learning environment that not only emphasizes theoretical knowledge but also integrates practical applications through state-of -the-art teaching and research laboratories.

Our curriculum is continuously evolving to also address societal needs and sustainable development goals. Through our engaged scholarship, we strive to collaborate with industries and communities, ensuring our programs are relevant and impactful. Our graduates are well-equipped with problem-solving skills, socially responsive and a fundamental understanding of physics, preparing them for diverse careers in industry, research and education.

The department of Physics prides itself on its strong research culture, with 100% of our academic staff holding doctoral degrees, and 63% of our academic staff holding prestigious NRF ratings. We engage in cutting-edge research across fields such as condensed matter theoretical, and experimental physics, as well as nanotechnology. Our staff and research groups maintain strong local collaboration such as iThemba LABS and the Centre for High-Performance Computing as well as strong international collaborations.

Our efforts have led to numerous publications in high-impact journals and technological advancements, including an American patent in non-volatile resistive random-access memory (ReRAM). We also host distinguished professors leading the University catalytic niche area, aviation and aeronautical studies, as well as the Centre for Materials Science. Additionally, we host postgraduate fellows from both local and international countries, further enriching our research capabilities and expanding our global reach.

At the Department of Physics, we are committed to inclusivity and diversity, actively supporting the development of women in physics through leadership initiatives and creating a balanced and supporting working environment.

You are welcome to join us at the Department of Physics at UNISA, where academic excellence, innovation, impactful engaged scholarship, cutting-edge research and collaboration drive us forward.
