More than 150 College of Accounting Sciences postgraduate students recently gathered at the Kgorong Building on Unisa's main campus to attend a meet-and-greet function−Let's Meet. The event was arranged as a casual networking function for all postgraduate students. Prof Cameron Modisane, Acting Executive Deputy Dean of the College of Accounting Sciences (CAS), explained to students that the college is committed to providing quality education and opportunities to interact with effective and influential industry leaders. He emphasised that they provided their students with stepping stones to help them improve their lives.
The event was part of the college's 8th-anniversary celebrations, coinciding with Unisa's 150-year celebrations. The event also formed part of the master plan to reposition the college as a leader in accounting education. Modisane said the college is committed to contributing to advancing and transforming the accounting profession in South Africa.
Students took the opportunity to interact with one another and engage with the CAS management on academic issues, mentorship opportunities and other personal growth matters. Cyril Madiba, a Chartered Accountant (CA[SA]) with 11 years of experience in the banking and financial services industry, including experience in auditing, investment banking, finance management, change and asset-based finance, was the guest speaker at the event. After his presentation, he awarded one student a six-month mentorship opportunity at his company. The student will get to spend time with Madiba to learn how he conducts his business, including how he operates his NGO, which he runs with his partner. Madiba said his mission was to develop the leadership skills of young people so that they can become agents of positive change in their respective areas of influence.
The informative yet fun-filled event saw some students walking away with laptops, a cash voucher from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), as well as other prizes from organisations such as the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), Investec and Standard Bank. More than fifteen potential employers attended the event.
Students expressed gratitude to the college for creating a platform for engagement and exposure to the industry.
