| Purpose statement: The purpose of the Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education is to develop professionally competent educators who are knowledgeable, skilled, and ethically inclined to facilitate early care and learning in diverse early childhood contexts. The open distance e-learning environment (ODel) will afford multi-modal learning opportunities to develop in-depth specialisation of knowledge, practical skills and experience required for quality Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) in a rapidly transforming context. |

Each Unisa qualification is structured in such a way that you need to pass a certain number of NQF level credits within a certain amount of time in order to graduate.
Pre-requisite: If Module A is a pre-requisite for Module B, you must pass Module A before you may register for Module B.
You may not register for more than the allowed maximum number of credits / modules per academic year and / or semester: 60 credits per semester or 120 credits per academic year.
The maximum number of credits do not include supplementary and / or aegrotat examinations from a previous semester. Modules taken for non-degree / non-diploma purposes also count towards the maximum number of credits allowed.

While you are deciding on the modules for which you will be registering, write down the module names and codes so that you have something to refer to when completing your registration.

Language choices are dependent on the Home Language on your matric certificate. You MUST continue
with the Home Language stipulated on your certificate. The First Additional Language option is
English if it is not your Home Language. If English is your home language, you can choose either an
African language or Afrikaans as your First Additional Language. The Second Additional Language
(Communicative Competence) is then from a different group to your Home Language and First Additional
Language.
Example 1: Home language on Matric certificate is Sepedi, so you will take Sepedi Home Language.
You will then choose the English First Additional language options and you can choose either
Afrikaans or another African language (other than Sepedi) as your Second Additional Language.
Example 2: Home language on Matric certificate is English, so you will take English Home Language
(ENG1515). You can then choose any African language or Afrikaans as First Additional language
options and you can choose either Afrikaans or another African language (other than the one chosen
as First Additional language) as your Second Additional Language.
Example 3: Home language on Matric certificate is Afrikaans, so you will take Afrikaans Home
Language. You will then choose English (ENG1514) as First Additional language options and you can
choose either any African language as your Second Additional Language.
Important: All modules in Group A are compulsory. Select a module from Group B either (English as
Home Language) or (English as First Additional Language) and select ONE Module from Group C
(Second Additional Language [communicative competence].
Important: All modules in Group A are compulsory, based on the module selected at FIRST LEVEL from
Group B (Home Language) or (First Additional Language), If English Home language is selected from
Group B, select any TWO modules from Group D, if
English First Additional Language is selected from Group B, select any TWO modules from Group C. The

Group C or D must be from the same language group and may not be the same language selected in Group
C at FIRST LEVEL.
