Presidential recognition of CEMS HRM expertise

Prof Mariëtte Coetzee with her presidential letter of appointment

Prof Mariëtte Coetzee from the Human Resource Management Department, College of Economic and Management Sciences (CEMS), was appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa in November 2019 to serve as one of eight members of the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers. This call-up for national duty for a five-year term as a member of the commission is a nod of acknowledgement to her expertise and recognised academic standing within the field of remuneration management from the highest level.

Her reaction to this prestigious appointment is that it is both humbling and exciting to have been called to serve the nation in a capacity that has direct influence in an area (payment of public office bearers) that in the public eye is often perceived as contentious and sensitive.

The commission has already met a number of times since Coetzee’s appointment and she is excited to take up alongside her fellow members the many challenges presented by the mandate of the commission. She recounts that the positive response, congratulations and pledges of collegial support she has received from all levels of the Unisa community have been quite overwhelming and serve as a strong motivation to make CEMS and Unisa proud through dedicated service and commitment to the duties of the appointment.

With a twinkle in her eye and alluding to the "motto" of her home department, she confides: "One of the nice spin-offs of this appointment is the confirmation that HR (still) rocks!"

The Unisa community wishes her well for what promises to be an interesting and exciting half-decade journey!
