The Department of Marketing and Retail Management is home to a dedicated team producing impactful research that contributes to both academia and industry in marketing. Estelle van Tonder is a Professor of Marketing at the University of South Africa. She holds a DCom degree in Marketing Management and is an NRF rated researcher. Her research focuses on customer citizenship behaviour. She is particularly interested in advancing understanding of the social support and help customers provide to other customers in the retail environment and has initiated and managed several collaborative research projects with international colleagues in this regard. Her research has been published in international highly regarded peer-reviewed journals, most notably the Journal of Business Research, Journal of Consumer Marketing and International Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services. As a specialist in her field, Estelle regularly speaks at International conferences, acts as referee for various international journals and conferences, has made several textbook contributions, is involved in postgraduate supervision and examination and acts as a consultant for industry.

 

Prof Michael Cant

Michael cant is a Professor in the Department of Marketing and Retail Management. He joined the University of South Africa on 1 January 1986 as a lecturer in the department of Marketing . He obtained his Masters degree in 1985 and his DCom in Marketing in 1991. In 1993 he was appointed as associate professor and full professor in 1995. Over the years he taught a wide range of undergraduate and post graduate courses and was instrumental in the offering of Short Learning Programmes in the department. His field of specialisation include strategic marketing, retail management, consumer behaviour, and marketing communications. Over the years he was editor of more than 17 academic textbooks, contributed to more that 30 textbooks as author and presented over 35 papers at international conferences- receiving a number of citations for best paper at a conference. He also published over 55 articles in accredited journals over the years in the field of marketing, marketing education , small business and other disciplines. He started an academic journal the International Retail and Marketing review in 2004 and today this journal, renamed the Retail and Marketing review is well received internationally with various bodies such as DOAJ, DHET, WoS, and AJOL. The publication is currently owned by IMM and managed by him.

 

Prof Khathutshelo Makhitha

Mercy Makhitha is a Full Professor in Marketing and Retail Management. In February 2015, she joined Unisa as a Chair of Department (CoD) in the Department of Marketing and Retail Management and has since retired from the CoD position. She obtained a PHD degree in Marketing Management from The University of Pretoria in 2014. She is currently teaching Shopper Marketing. She presented papers at national and international conferences and authored research articles published in accredited journals. She edited, co-edited and authored numerous books in marketing and retail Management, namely, strategic marketing, marketing management, Business to business marketing and Marketing in Africa.

JA Wiid is a Professor in Marketing at the Department of Marketing and Retail Management, Unisa. Prof Wiid supervises and co-supervises masters and doctoral studies. He published extensively in the field of marketing and business management in international and national accredited journals, he also authored and co-authored several marketing and business management textbooks and has presented numerous papers at international and national conferences.
