Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

Environmental crises have reached global proportions, with devastating impacts on humankind and the environment. These include biodiversity loss (species extinctions, endangered and threatened species), climate change effects (increasing frequency and intensity of cyclones, droughts, floods, high temperatures and veld fires), disease epidemics, environmental degradation (alien invasive species, deforestation, desertification, habitat loss, ecosystem degradation), food scarcity, fresh water scarcity, pollution (air, land and water pollution) and ozone depletion, among others.

Education for Sustainable Development is an educational response to the urgent and drastic challenges facing the planet. It aims at promoting relevant knowledge, understanding, skills and values in order to take informed action [to address these global (and local) environmental challenges] to enable a just and sustainable future for all. This is in line with global sustainability initiatives such as the current Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
